National Shag Dance Championship in Myrtle Beach – March 2013
A Myrtle Beach tradition that began in 1984, the National Shag Dance Championships is the longest running shag dance contest in the United States. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the competition, which has been dubbed the “Best Swing Event in the USA.”
For the second time the Spanish Galleon in North Myrtle Beach will be the site of the competition. Other former locations include the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and Studebakers.
Mistress of Ceremony will be television personality, Diane DeVaughn–Stokes for her twenty-fifth year of hosting and returning from Atlanta disc jockey for the dancers will be Dee Jay Hall of Famer, Tom Hamrick.
The event draws some of the best shag dancers in the country, competing for more than $17,000 in cash and prizes. Past winners have performed on a wide variety of television shows and events including: Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, PGA Annual Banquets, NBA games, Beach Music Awards and Harvard University.
Celebrities have also joined in on the shagging fun. Stars who have attended, entertained or presented awards include: Academy Award winner Robert Duvall, 50’s singing sensation Fabian, and the legendary “Shirelles”, Entertainment tonight’s Nancy Humphries Odell, actors from the movie “Shag”, Annabeth Gish and Tyrone Power Jr., America’s Got Talent’s “All That” and Steve Gatlin of the “Gatlin Brothers”.
The shag or Carolina shag as some call it, which originated in the late 1930s in clubs in North Myrtle Beach, appeals to people from all walks of life and all ages.
