“There are seven stations, each having something to do with Brookgreen,” said Linda Beckham, education specialist at Brookgreen Gardens. “For example, one is called digging in the past, and it’s an area with sand that kids can dig into, and at the bottom they’ll find something like an arrowhead. It’s a fun replica of an archeological dig.”
There is also a make-and-take station in the Children’s Discovery Room that changes periodically. The current make-and-take station is about amphibians, and kids will be able to make their own frog mask.
Beyond the discovery room amusements, Brookgreen Gardens offers plenty for the whole family. From the stunning collection of larger-than-life sculpture to the lush garden and wildlife preserve, the 9,100-acre Brookgreen Gardens is one Myrtle Beach-area attraction you don’t want to miss. This National Historic Landmark was opened in 1932 on the property that formerly was home to four rice plantations, and a rich sense of history permeates the grounds.
In addition to the art and gardens, Brookgreen Gardens is also home to the Lowcountry Zoo, which houses animals that were either bred in captivity or were injured in the wild and would not be able to survive without care. The animals are representative of the species found in the Lowcountry, such as alligators, bald eagles, grey foxes and river otters. Birders in particular love the cypress aviary, which is the only known aviary built over an existing cypress swamp. It’s home to black-crowned night herons, hooded merganser, ibises, wood ducks and more.
When you’re visiting Myrtle Beach, be sure to include on your to-do list a visit to Brookgreen Gardens, which is located just 15 miles from Myrtle Beach. And bring the kids! There’s plenty for them to enjoy, including the Children’s Discovery Room, open daily beginning this month.
