Jonathan: Hello my name is Jonathan. I’m the Company Manager here at the Palace Theatre. Welcome to backstage of the Palace Theatre. I’m going to take you all on a tour through our backstage area, behind the scenes so you get a glimpse of what goes on in preparation for one of our shows such as Illusions of Magic. So I’m going to take you through wardrobe, makeup, costumes, you’ll meet the dancers and also lighting and special effects. So yeah, come with me!
Here I would like to introduce you all the Illusions of Magic dancers. We have ten dancers in total. And out here before show, about an hour before the show warming up. The show is very physical and we have up to eight shows a week. So obviously they have to make sure that their bodies are ready and that they’re in the right mind set as well to perform in front of all these people. We’ve got the best of the best dancers here in Myrtle Beach and the best dancers from around the world as well. They have to be ready to perform in front of nearly three thousand people.
Amy: Hello my name is Amy Edge and I’m the Lighting Director at the Palace Theatre in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Today we have the stage for the Illusions of Magic. I control all the lighting for the entire show as well as video and special effects. We do special effects such as the theo two jets you see. They run throughout the show. We have foggers we set behind the fans as well so that the fans can actually blow out the smoke, so it looks like an old warehouse. So while controlling the video I can actually bring it up from my board. Each video has a layer on it, so I can just take that up, bring up the intensity of it and it starts the video. This is actually a video about Houdini and Cardini and their special magic that they did and our magician actually follows through with. So I can pull up any light I want to and go to my effects and just start a chase and it starts as something very simple and I try to change it you can see it starts to change to what the effect is. I can make it go faster and then I can slow it back down. I can also take the rest of the lights and turn them back on, point them in different directions, and I can make them do different effects. I can make them move to a circle, I can make them change color…and I can do that with basically any of the lights I want to. So this is a little it about what I do and all the special effects that goes on behind the Illusions of Magic. Hope to see you soon at the show. Bye!
Jonathan: Here we are in our wardrobe room. These are our wonderful wardrobe mistresses, Ms. Sue and Lisa working very hard. They have to make sure all the costumes are ready and looking good to go on stage, on to our dancers and magicians and assistants. We have eight looks in the show, eight different costumes for our dancers and they have quick changes as well. So between numbers these ladies have to be ready to help them zip zippers and tie things up to make sure the costumes are ready before they go on stage. And the magician has ten different outfits as well. So, when the performers come on stage, the moments you don’t see are actually frantically getting ready into their next costumes to get ready because they really don’t have much time and it’s these ladies who help them get ready to go on the stage.
So here we are in the girl dancers dressing room. These beautiful ladies are getting ready for the show…it doesn’t take them that long to get ready does it girls? No, you see. They’re already beautiful. Here is Alyssa teasing one of her wigs getting ready for the show. How many wigs do you wear in the show?
Jonathan: Three wigs. So obviously as well as costume changes there’s wig changes, teasing the hair, which takes some time. So when they’re not on stage they’re frantically back here making sure they’re ready to be on stage. Here’s Briana doing her real hair, curling that. Also makeup is where we’ll see Andrea here is getting into makeup. We’ve got some pictures here which sort of show our dancers what kind of makeup would go for because of the bright lights the makeup has to be really bold and exaggerated so…it takes quite a while too. Isn’t that right?
Jonathan: They’ve got lipstick, they’ve got big eye shadow and also they wear big fake eyelashes to make the eyes stand out on stage. Now once they’ve got all the hair and makeup ready, they have to put on their costumes to get ready for the show. And here is our lovely dance captain, Sally modeling one of the costumes from the Pavooki section of the show…lovely sort of Japanese look. So we just got our five minute call, ready for show time…so these girls, you gonna be ready girls?
Jonathan: Good! They’re gonna be ready. Make sure you’re ready to come here, the Palace Theatre to watch Illusions of Magic.
