The art museum has been open for 15 years. It started out as a vacation home for the Cannon Family and later the Springs Family of the Springs Corporation. Later when development was taking place around the 50th Avenue area of the North-end of the beach, the home was scheduled to be destroyed and the arts patron, Dave Fisher came in and convinced the construction company to give the house to her if she would move it. So, basically they moved the house - 8 miles to where it currently is at 3100 South Ocean Boulevard.
The reason it is named now the Franklin G. Burrough and Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is because at the time the Myrtle Beach Farms Company now Burroughs and Chapin donated the land, so in honor of them donating the land the museum was named after them.
We have a great list of artists that come through our doors. I want to say one that most notable we have that people have repeatedly asked for is Jonathan Green that we are very fortunate to form a relationship with him so we have had several exhibits of his. But on top of that we have had some big names like Jasper Johns exhibit, Ansel Adams exhibit and we have tried to cross our exhibits with things like music or writing or things of that nature so over the years we have had photographs of famous dancers or famous musicians or famous artists and have had lecture series attached to that which I always think is great to try and combine different art forms.
The art museum besides it being an architectural treasure, when you come up to the building it is just this beautiful old style cabana home. It really has a comfortable relaxed welcoming feeling inside the museum. We are free admission which is always nice to add to a vacation itinerary but we not only want you to feel like you came into someone else's museum, but a museum that you now feel a part of and the future exists on us continuing to grow and continuing to grab new people's attention and continuing to find people that are appreciative of the arts.
To find out more about what is going on at the Art Museum people can always go to www.MyrtleBeachArt Museum.org and we also have a Facebook page and a twitter page that people can check out as well and we always keep it up to date with all of our exhibits, events and all of the children's art projects.
