History of Surfing
OWNER: Welcome to Surf City Surf Shop here in the heart of Myrtle Beach. My wife and I, Laura, started Surf City back in May of 1978. I grew up on the West Coast, but after finishing college, I had to get a real job. And that job included extensive travel in the Mid-Atlantic States, and being a true surfer at heart, I had to find a beach. I chose Myrtle Beach not because the surf is so good, but it was the vibe and the people here.
We opened our store in 1978. We started selling surfboards, skateboards, along with some clothing and surf gear. The surf industry was much smaller then and now some 35 years later, we still sell surfboards and skateboards, but have added skim boards, boogie boards, and now stand-up paddleboards.
Our clothing lines have expanded to not just young men surfers, but to women, little girls and boys. Names like Billabong, Roxy, Hurley, O’Neill; and it’s just not rainbow sandals anymore. We carry Reefs, Toms, Sanuks, and lots of accessories like sunglasses, wallets and backpacks. And if you’re looking for a surfboard, we have short boards, long boards, fun boards or we can create your custom surfboard right here at our location. If you’re not sure what you want, you can always rent a board and find out.
Want to try the latest fitness craze? Let’s go stand-up paddle boarding. We have everything you need right here, from lessons and all the gear, and of course the best boards and paddles around. And speaking of lessons, for the past 20 years we’ve given thousands of lessons to young and old here at Surf City.
