Beating the Heat in Myrtle Beach

There’s nothing like a sunny day in the Myrtle Beach sun, but one can only take so much heat. The good news is there are plenty of places to get out of the sun and into some fun during your Grand Strand vacation. Here are four options for cooling off and chilling out in Myrtle Beach:

• Shopping: A hot or rainy day is the perfect time to knock out that shopping list for loved ones back home. Enclosed, air-conditioned malls like Coastal Grand Mall, Myrtle Beach Mall and Inlet Square Mall allow visitors to window shop and people watch while escaping the summer heat. Outdoor complexes like Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot Landing, The Market Common and the Tanger Outlet Shops may require a little outdoor activity while walking from store to store but you can cool off quickly by dipping into dozens of shops.

• Restaurants: Taking a break from the beach to cool off and refuel your body is always a good idea, and there are more Myrtle Beach restaurants and bars than you can ever visit in one vacation. However, here are a few local hot spots that are famous for having cool atmospheres, in more ways than one. Stroll from the beach to Beach Bummz Café in Myrtle Beach, Fat Harold’s in North Myrtle Beach and Scotty’s Beach Bar in Surfside Beach for cold beer, frozen drinks and a refreshing meal before heading back out into the sun. Ice cream parlors and frozen yogurt shops are also scattered throughout the Strand and can cool you off inside and out.

• Attractions: Some of the Grand Strand’s top attractions are not only popular because of their novelty, but also because of their air conditioning. Ripley’s Aquarium and WonderWorks at Broadway at the Beach are prime examples of places to have a great time while also bringing down your body temperature. On the Boardwalk, the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel features air-conditioned gondolas and great views of the ocean and downtown district. Movie theaters are the ultimate escape from the heat and can be found at all the major malls.

• Golf: Sure, golf sounds like a horrible way to get out of the sun, but not if you know where to go to chase the little white ball. Indoor facilities at Tupelo Bay and Possum Trot golf courses provide the perfect place to your swing, and Cancun Lagoon Mini-Golf offers an indoor/outdoor course where you can get out of the sun and still have some fun.
