Boasting some record catches and a long history on the Grand Strand, the Cherry Grove Pier is a well-loved landmark at the beach. The pier, which has been in Cherry Grove since the 1950s, has been rocked by a few hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo destroyed the pier in 1989. A two-story observation deck was added during the reconstruction but was torn off 10 years later in Hurricane Floyd. The deck was rebuilt and remains the only of its kind on the Grand Strand. Fishermen enjoy long days and tall tales on the pier, but not all the stories are fiction. A record 1,780-pound tiger shark was caught here in 1964, and a 98-pound Tarpon was landed in 2002. Pictures serve as proof on the pier’s web site, which also highlights the prized catches of many other visitors. Bluefish, mackerel, red drum, sea trout, spots, whiting and summer flounder are among the species typically caught in Cherry Grove. Visitors can also go crabbing for Blue Crab from the pier either with drop nets or long-handled dip nets. A full-service bait and tackle shop can hook you up with bait, rods and reels, beach souvenirs, and more.
