Baseball is better at the beach. That’s the rallying cry of the Grand Strand’s minor-league home team – the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Playing 70 home games each season in the spring and summer, the Pelicans are the Advanced Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The Pelicans play at TicketReturn.com Stadium across from Broadway at the Beach and offer good times for baseball fans and non-fans alike.
The friendly confines of Pelicans Ballpark, which is routinely ranked among the nation’s Top 50 minor-league balpark experiences, plays host to both top young talent on the diamond and family-friendly entertainment in the grand stands. Fans can watch future big-leaguers playing America’s pastime at a high level, while also enjoying the bizarre between-inning hijinks and creative game-day promotions.
The Pelicans, who have earned national acclaim for providing quality baseball in a fun environment, are known for creating a kid-friendly atmosphere. Children get to run the bases after the game and families can play some pre-game catch on the field on Sundays. Occasional kids clinics are held by the team, and the on-site playground and games are a real hit with younger fans, who also can have their pictures taken with mascots Splash the Pelican, Dinger the Home Run Dog, and the Rally Shark while enjoying a hot dog, ice cream or cotton candy.
But everyone feels like a child again at the ol’ ballpark, and the Pelicans cater to “kids” of all ages. The concession stands offer a wide selection of traditional baseball favorite, like popcorn, peanuts and Cracker Jacks, as well as some curve-ball cuisine like lobster rolls and Philly cheesesteaks. The right-field section features a beer garden with a porch and picnic tables, while the left-field bleachers welcome fans looking to bask in the setting sunlight. The 5,500-seat main section offers covered and open-air seating with chair-backs and cupholders, and air-conditioned box seats are available for a VIP-style baseball experience.
The Pelicans host daily specials and giveaways, as well as nightly promotions. Annual favorites include Bark at the Park (fans bring their dogs to the game), Free Fireworks Nights and Thirsty Thursday ($1 draft beers).
