Big Mike’s

This comfort-food capital is tucked away off the main drag of Kings Highway, but hungry patrons can find a hidden gem in Big Mike’s. The owner, Mike Chestnut, didn’t get his nickname from eating bad cooking, and he was smart enough to hire local soul-food legend Queenie Bowens to work her magic in the kitchen.

Big Mike’s Food

Big Mike’s is so good that you and your family will make it a point to come here every time you’re in town. The experience begins with suspense as patrons start scanning the daily special dry-erase board as soon as they enter the door. There are a few staples you can count on every day – Miss Queenie’s famous fried chicken and fried pork chops. Rotating entrees include chicken bog, meat loaf and country fried steak, and it’s served with your choice of mashed potatoes or rice and gravy. Sides include mac and cheese, green beans, fried okra and more. Most diners go for the Meat-and-Three special with drink for $7.95, but a menu is available for those who can’t find what they want on the board. Big Mike’s also has a full bar.

Big Mike’s Atmosphere

The decor is basic diner … because it can be. A long bar serves as a lunch counter and popular gathering spot for locals. Chestnut doubles as a Myrtle Beach City Councilman so it’s a good place to catch up on the latest gossip. Private tables are available on a slightly elevated section of the restaurant but it has an open-room diner feel.
