Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

It took some courage for a Texas-style barbecue chain to open up a location on the Grand Strand, given that there are already several Carolina-style joints that have been serving it the way we like it for decades.

But Dickey’s has earned plenty of taste bud respect from locals and visitors while priding itself on “authenticity, innovation, and barbecue sauce.”

With an on-site smoked-meat process that dates back to the Dickey brothers’ original method from 1941, the Dallas-based chain offers meat lovers Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, Barbecue Honey Ham, Turkey Breast, Chicken, Polish Sausage, Pork Ribs, Spicy Cheddar Sausage, and plenty of great sides to go with them.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Food

The meats are available in several forms, including Sandwiches, Plates, Salads, Family Packs, and with something they call a Baker.

Plate options include a 1, 2, or 3 Meat with your choice of 2 of the following – Barbecue Beans, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, Baked Potato Casserole, Caesar Salad, Mac & Cheese, Jalapeno Beans, Green Beans with Bacon, Chips, Fried Okra, Fried Onion Tanglers, or Waffle Iron Fries.

Those in the mood for a Sandwich can choose from The Westerner (2 meats, 2 slices of Cheddar), The Big Barbecue (self-explanatory), or a Lil’ Hoagie, and each is available as a plate with 2 sides for a small fee.
Bakers, or Baked Potatoes, are loaded up with all manner of toppings and meats, cooked in the oven, and served hot. Options include the Giant Baker and Meat with bacon, sour cream, shredded cheese, green onions, and your choice of meat; the Beef and Cheese Baker with brisket, fried onion tanglers, shredded cheddar, and barbecue sauce; and the Pork and Tangler Baker which is the same as the Beef and Cheese but with pulled pork.

Leafy green choices include a Chicken Caesar and Garden Salad in addition to their famous Smokehouse Salad of chopped beef brisket, romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar, fried onion tanglers, and ranch dressing.

And, like any barbecue restaurant worth its smoke, Dickey’s serves fresh Sweet Tea and Pecan Pie for those with sweet teeth.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Atmosphere

Located in a small strip of businesses just off of 38th Avenue North and 17 Bypass, Dickey’s has indoor and outdoor seating options available.

Orders are taken at a wood and brick-paneled walk-up counter, and customers can then take a seat at a booth wherever they’d like – it’s a casual affair here, which is just as it should be at any serious barbecue eatery.
