Quidditch anyone? North Myrtle Beach was host to the 7th Annual Quidditch World Cup in April 2014 at the brand new sports complex. This is the largest event of the year for IQA and teams from around the world that came to play and show their competitive skills. How did the game of a Harry Potter Movie become a sport that teams love to play? Well, it started out as a competition between two schools and now has become an international event featuring the best of 80 teams from around the world. So, what exactly is Quidditch? Well, if you are a Harry Potter fan, then you might think about players flying through the air on brooms trying to have their seekers catch the snitch. However, we cannot fly through the air, so why not bring it all down to earth and play the game on a playing field. Quidditch is a co-ed contact sport with a unique mix of elements from rugby, basketball, and dodgeball. A quidditch team is made up of seven athletes who play with brooms between their legs at all times. While the game can appear chaotic to the casual observer, quidditch is an exciting sport to watch and is even more fun to play. Each team has three chasers that play with a ball called the quaffle and try to score goals worth 10 points each by shooting or dunking the ball through any on of the three hoops at the other end of the pitch. The quaffle is advanced down the field by running with it, passing it to teammates, or kicking it. Each team has a keeper who defends the goal hoops. Two beaters use dodgeballs called bludgers to disrupt the flow of the game by “knocking out” other players. Any player hit by a bludger is out of play until they touch their own hoops. Each team also has a seeker who tries to catch the snitch. The snitch is a ball attached to the waistband of the snitch runner, a neutral athlete in a yellow uniform who uses any means to avoid capture. The snitch is worth 30 points and its capture ends the game. The games began and the fun came from all around. Cheering fans, excited teams and warm Carolina sunshine, all are great elements to an exciting weekend in Myrtle Beach. . This year, the World Cup had over 1500 players united together playing this Harry Potter-inspired game while supporting the efforts to be recognized. The teams qualified through regional play and then had the opportunity to fight to the top and be crowned 2014 winners of the World Cup. So, keep an eye out for the brooms for the next time they hit the fields and head out to an exciting game of Quidditch. The Grand Strand is becoming an epic for sports tourism featuring fields for softball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football, cheering competitions and more. Remember, after the games are done, Myrtle Beach has all of the oceanfront beaches, entertainment, attractions and accommodations right for you. Check out the Grand Strand for your next sporting event.
